What causes teeth staining?
Staining of your teeth often happens over time and can cause a yellowing of your natural teeth colour. Common reasons include foods and drinks, tobacco, age, medications and trauma. Food and drinks such as coffee, tea and red wine are some major causes of staining.
Dental whitening products provided by your dentist normally contains either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide which can break down these stains. However it must be noted that results can vary and are individual dependent.
What are my options for whitening?
Generally there are three main options for teeth whitening. Take home whitening involves dentist fabricating custom trays for you that you will use at home. A hydrogen peroxide gel is also given to you under your dentists supervision which you will use for 5 to 10 consecutive days. This method provides excellent results and minimal sensitivity and is generally the method our dentists recommend.
The second option is in office whitening. In this procedure your dentist will use very strong hydrogen peroxide, often in combination with a light, in a procedure carried out at the dental clinic. Whilst this method does provide instant results, it often provides intense sensitivity and is not recommended for all patients. More often than not take home whitening will have to be used in conjunction with in-office whitening to produce desired results.
The final option is store or internet bought whitening products. These products often either have a very low percentage of hydrogen peroxide or doesnt have hydrogen peroxide in them at all. Such products often rely on very abrasive ingredients to achieve stain removal that can damage your teeth.
