At Lang Lang Dental, we understand wisdom teeth can become painful and create ongoing problems for patients. Our clinic provides a wide range of treatment options for any wisdom teeth concerns including wisdom tooth extraction and assessment.
Wisdom teeth (so named because they are usually the last to erupt) are rear molars that come through when people are in their late teens, twenties or older. This is because our eating habits have evolved over time. Hundreds of years ago, our diet consisted of food that was coarse and difficult to break down, so our jaws had to work harder and thus developed larger teeth bones.
Nowadays, wisdom teeth serve little purpose and can often become “impacted” (wedged-in) due to limited space left in the jaw. Symptoms can include pain while eating or chewing, extreme pain and swelling of the gums.
What age should I have my wisdom teeth removed?
In most cases wisdom teeth that need removal are best extracted at an early age, usually in one’s late teens or early twenties. This is because the procedure becomes far more complicated if a person waits until later in life, as the roots of these molars become fully formed, the surrounding bone becomes denser and recovery time is longer.
Like all forms of surgery, wisdom teeth removal contains risks that will be discussed by your Lang Lang Dental. An x-ray (OPG) will be required to determine the degree of these risks. However it should be remembered that removal of wisdom teeth are very common procedures.

Why do I need to have my wisdom teeth removed?
Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. Extraction of wisdom teeth is usually recommended when the patient is experiencing symptoms (inflamed gums, swelling, pain), a cyst is found, or if a wisdom tooth is partially erupted (when part of the crown of the tooth has come through the gum, but not all of it). Partially erupted wisdom teeth are non-functional and very difficult to keep clean, which often leads to gum inflammation or decay. Your local dentist will use an x-ray to determine which teeth should be removed, though ultimately this decision is yours.
In most cases, wisdom teeth are best extracted at an early age, usually in one’s late teens or early twenties. The procedure becomes far more complicated into adulthood. Once the molar roots are fully formed, the surrounding bone becomes denser and recovery time is longer.
